Basic Income Ireland, a national body for the promotion of a Universal and Unconditional Basic Income (UBI) in Ireland, issues the following comment on the proposal for a Basic Income Guarantee contained in the recent Pathways to Work 2021-2025 document released by Government.
The proposal in the Pathways to Work document does not qualify as a Basic Income. The measure proposed in Pathways is not universal, is highly conditional and is very complex.
Basic Income Ireland wishes to clearly distance itself from this proposed measure.
A Basic Income has to meet the criteria of being Universal and Unconditional. A Basic Income is an automatic payment from the state to every adult legal resident, without conditions attached.
